Mark Micale

Associate Professor of History
Mark S. Micale (Ph.D., Yale University, 1987) is a specialist in the comparative cultural and intellectual history of modern Europe, with an emphasis on fin-de-siecle France, and in the history of science and medicine, especially psychiatry and psychoanalysis. He is the author of Approaching Hysteria: Disease and Its Interpretations (1995); the editor of Beyond the Unconscious: Essays in the History of Psychiatry (1993) and The Mind of Modernism: Psychology, Medicine, and the Cultural Arts in Europe and America (2004); and the co-editor of Discovering the History of Psychiatry (1994), and Traumatic Pasts: History, Psychiatry, and Trauma in the Modern Age, 1870-1930 (2002). He currently has in progress a general study of medicine and masculinity from the Renaissance to Freud.
