John Randolph

Assistant Professor of History
John Randolph specializes in Imperial Russian history, 1725-1917. His current project, The Priamukhino Harmony, reexamines the role of the controversial Bakunin family in the making of modern Russian social thought. Based on extensive research in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Tver, The Priamukhino Harmony integrates several of John’s thematic interests within European History, including the history of the nobility, the family, and the role of literature in modern society. Trained in Russian literature while completing his degree in Modern European History at U.C. Berkeley, John participated in folklore expeditions in Russia in 1989-1990, and has also worked extensively in the manuscript collection of St. Petersburg’s Institute for Russian Literature (Pushkinskii Dom). His article “The Old Mansion: Revisiting the History of the Russian Country Estate,” appeared in the journal Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History, 1(4): 729-49, Fall 2000.
