Charles C. Stewart

Professor of History
Professor Stewart specializes in Islam; family history; and the history of West and North Africa. His current research focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century intellectual and social history, and Islamic West Africa. Selected publications include "The Sokoto Caliphate in the Nineteenth Century" in R. A. Ajaye and Michael Crowder, eds., History of West Africa (Longman, second edition, 1986); ed., Popular Islam in Twentieth-Century Africa (Manchester University Press, 1986); and "Islam," in A. Roberts, ed., The Colonial Moment in Africa (Cambridge University Press, 1990). Professor Stewart received his doctorate from Oxford University in 1970.
