War, Society, and Culture
The study of war, society, and culture at the University of Illinois goes beyond the battlefield without forgetting the centrality of combat. We try to combine traditional subjects with new approaches, including those from cultural history and gender studies. Students are encouraged to become historians first and military historians second. Our program is greatly enriched by our exchange program with the Ohio State University, whose faculty in the field work with students here at Illinois.

Ohio State University
We have conducted an exchange with the Ohio State University for the past several years. Each semester one of the OSU faculty in military history visit the University of Illinois to deliver a few lectures and work with our graduate students, and, in exchange, one of our faculty does the same at OSU. Thus, our graduate students can take guided readings courses with the distinguished faculty at OSU:
