Lincoln Bicentennial Lecture Series
On March 12, 2008 James M. McPherson, the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History, Emeritus, at Princeton University will deliver the History Department’s Lincoln Bicentennial Lecture. The lecture, entitled “Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander-in-Chief” will take place at 3:30 pm in the auditorium of the Alice Campbell Alumni Center. It is free and open to the public; a reception follows. This event inaugurates the History department’s year-long celebration of the Lincoln bicentennial, which will include additional distinguished speakers, specialized undergraduate courses and outreach workshops for area teachers.
Professor McPherson is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning volume, Battle Cry Of Freedom as well as numerous other books, including For Causes And Comrades: Why Men Fought In The Civil War; Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution; Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam; and Hallowed Ground: A Walk at Gettysburg. Prof. McPherson, a past president of the American Historical Association, is regarded among his peers as the greatest living historian of the Civil War.
